Literary Wonders of the World

Aragam: Where Kashmir’s Beauty Meets the World of Books

North Kashmir, often hailed as an unparalleled paradise on earth, possesses a beauty yet to be fully discovered. Nestled within this mesmerizing region lies the district of Bandipore, a place that has recently captured the attention of both national and international media due to Aragam village.  Photo Credit: By Mohsin Mushtaq Bandipore is recognized for Alim, Adab, and Aab which represents “knowledge”, “good habits,” and “water resources” respectively. But it is getting attention for being transformed into a book village.  Why is it in the news? Whether you are a bibliophile or a traveling freak, Aragam Village has something more than you can imagine. It has a rich literary heritage where many poets and writers started their journey. Lala Aragami, a mystical poet and the saint of Kashmir is the best example who has published many of his literary works in Kashmiri language.  Today, Aragam is being known more as a ‘Book village.’ Situated on banks of Wular Lake, the largest freshwater Lake of Asia, this village is delighting the tourists with hundreds of homes having library.  In total, there are 400 households and the government selected it for the book village because of its close distance to Wular Lake. Sarhad, the organization that supported and aided this initiative has made 30000 books available for the public and planning to increase this to around eight lakh of various genres.  This is just the beginning as more and more planning is in process to create a favorable environemnt for readers. So the next time when you are planning to visit North Kashmir, don’t miss the chance to visit Aragam, the heaven for bibliophiles.  If you are also a fan of books and love to explore the literary adventure then become the part of our reading sessions and uncover the hidden parts of your personality. Keep reading folks!- Rahul Deo Sharma
